Common problems and solutions of MPO-MPO fiber jumpers
MPO (Multi fiber Push On) fiber jumpers are mainly used in high-density data centers, 40G/100G/400G optical module interconnection, and other scenarios. Due to its complex structure (usually containing 12/24 core optical fibers), MPO jumpers are prone to the following issues during use:
- Insertion loss is too high
Performance: Excessive attenuation of optical signals leads to unstable communication or a decrease in speed.
Possible reasons:
End contamination (dust, oil stains, fingerprints).
Scratches on the end face (due to improper insertion or adapter wear).
Fiber core misalignment (MPO connector manufacturing tolerance issue).
The bending radius of the optical fiber is too small (MPO jumpers are recommended to be ≥ 30mm).

✅ Clean the end face: Use MPO specialized cleaning tools (such as MPO cleaning pens, cleaning cartridges).
✅ Check the quality of the end face: Use MPO microscope to observe whether the end face is flat and free of scratches.
✅ Ensure correct insertion and removal: MPO plugs should be aligned with the guide slots to avoid slanted or forced insertion.
✅ Avoid excessive bending: Use cable management tools to secure jumpers.
- Polarity error
Performance: Mismatched transmission and reception signals result in communication failure of the link.
Possible reasons:
Wrong selection of jumper polarity type (Type A/B/C mixed).
MPO adapter polarity configuration error (such as straight through vs crossover).

✅ Confirm polarity standard (TIA-568 standard):
Type A (Direct): 1-on-1 connection (1 → 1, 2 → 2...).
Type B (crossover): 1 → 12, 2 → 11... (commonly used in parallel optics).

✅ Check the device interface requirements (such as QSFP28 optical modules typically requiring Type B).

- Misalignment of fiber core
Performance: Some fiber cores have normal communication, while others have no signal or high loss.
Possible reasons:
Poor manufacturing of MPO connectors (fiber core spacing error).
The adapter guide pin is damaged or missing.
Excessive plugging and unplugging can cause connector wear.

✅ Use MPO tester (such as OTDR/VFL) to locate the faulty fiber core.

- The connector buckle is damaged or difficult to insert and remove
Performance: MPO plug cannot be locked tightly and is prone to loosening and falling off.
Possible reasons:
Buckle breakage (frequent insertion and removal or external impact).
The internal shrapnel of the adapter has failed.

✅ Replace MPO jumpers (choose high-quality products with metal buckles).
✅ Check the status of the adapter and replace it if necessary.
✅ Avoid frequent plugging and unplugging to reduce mechanical wear and tear.
- Fiber optic fracture or microbend
Performance: The signal is intermittent and the OTDR detects abnormal attenuation points.
Possible reasons:
Jumper cables are compressed or stretched (such as cabinet door pinch injuries).
The fiber winding radius is too small (MPO jumpers are recommended to be ≥ 30mm).

✅ Use fiber optic protective sleeves (Split Sleeve) or cable racks.
✅ Avoid excessive pulling of MPO jumpers (especially high core jumpers).
- Compatibility issues with adapters
Performance: MPO jumper cannot be inserted or locked.
Possible reasons:
Adapter type mismatch (e.g. male MPO mistakenly plugged into female MPO).
The tolerance differences of MPO connectors from different manufacturers.

✅ Try to use MPO jumpers and adapters from the same brand.
- Environmental factors (temperature, humidity) impact
Performance: After long-term use, performance decreases and losses increase.

Moisture causes oxidation of the end face.
