Fiber optic jumper LC-ST dual core single-mode jumper1M/2M/3M/5M/10M/15M/20M/25M/30M
1. Excessive insertion loss
Phenomenon: Optical signal attenuation exceeds expectations (e.g.>0.5 dB).
reason:
Connector end face contamination (dust, fingerprints, oil stains).
Scratches or physical damage on the end face.
The connector is not aligned (such as flange offset).
The bending radius of the optical fiber is too small (such as<30mm), resulting in macro bending or micro bending losses.
2. Abnormal return loss
Phenomenon: The reflected signal is too strong, affecting the stability of the laser.
reason:
APC (inclined polishing) connector contamination or damage, resulting in end face angle failure (APC standard is 8 °).
The UPC/PC connector end face is worn and the polishing does not meet the standard.
The connector is not fully inserted and there is an air gap.
3. Fiber breakage or damage
Phenomenon: Complete or intermittent interruption of the signal.
reason:
Jumper cables are subjected to excessive pulling and squeezing (such as cabinet door pinch injuries).
The bending angle of the optical fiber during wiring is too small (such as right angle bending).
Long term stress leads to fatigue fracture of optical fibers.
4. Loose or detached connectors
Phenomenon: The signal is unstable after plugging and unplugging.
reason:
The connector buckle is worn (such as the latch of the LC jumper breaking).
The adapter (flange) is aging or has excessive tolerance.
The fiber optic cable without anti pull design resulted in the plug being subjected to force.
5. Wavelength mismatch
Phenomenon: Insufficient transmission distance or poor signal quality.
reason:
Misuse of multimode jumpers (OM1/OM2) instead of single-mode jumpers (OS2).
The working wavelength does not match the system (such as 1310nm vs 1550nm).
6. Impact of environmental factors
Phenomenon: Performance fluctuates with environmental changes.
reason:
Severe temperature changes cause fiber optic extension and contraction (such as outdoor applications).
Moisture enters the connector, causing oxidation of the end face (especially for non sealed jumpers).
7. Compatibility issues
Phenomenon: The device is unable to recognize or has a high error rate.
reason:
Use non-standard connectors (such as non-standard SC/LC).
The optical module of the device does not match the jumper mode (such as a single-mode module mistakenly connecting to a multi-mode jumper).
8. End face contamination
Phenomenon: Signal attenuation or intermittent.
reason:
Not using a dust cover, exposed to a dusty environment.
Improper cleaning methods (such as using residual fibers from alcohol swabs).
Solutions and preventive measures
Standardized operation:
Regularly inspect the end face using a fiber optic end face detector (such as a magnifying glass or OTDR).
Use dust-free cotton swabs and pure alcohol during cleaning to avoid secondary contamination.
Correct wiring:
Ensure the minimum bending radius (static ≥ 30mm, dynamic ≥ 50mm).
Use a cable manager to avoid squeezing.
Choose high-quality jumpers:
Compliant with ITU-T G.652. D standard (single-mode).
Prioritize choosing APC connectors (return loss>60dB) or high-precision UPC connectors (return loss>50dB).
Environmental adaptation:
Choose armored jumpers or temperature resistant models (-40 ° C~+85 ° C) for outdoor applications.
Troubleshooting steps
Replacement method: Replace the test with a known normal jumper.
OTDR testing: locate the fault point (such as fracture or high loss location).
Optical power meter: measures whether the end-to-end loss is within the budget range.
By standardizing installation and maintenance, the failure rate of single-mode fiber jumpers can be significantly reduced. For critical applications such as data centers, it is recommended to conduct regular link performance testing.
